Manchester United could be about to announce a major signing as they attempt to strengthen their midfield for the upcoming season.

Having missed out on long-term target Thiago Alcantara, United made a big for another Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas, though it is believed that the former Arsenal captain wishes to remain with the La Liga champions.

However, the Red Devils could be about to launch a £60m bid for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale, with the Wales international being linked today with a move away from White Hart Lane.

Last season’s Player and Young Player of the Year, Bale scored 21 goals for Spurs, leading their campaign to finish in the top four by a narrow margin to rivals Arsenal.

United's chief executive returned home from the club's pre-season tour of Asia to handle "urgent transfer business", although whether that was to keep hold of striker Wayne Rooney or to bring in news faces is unknown.

The failure to secure Champions League football had triggered a belief that Bale would move on from the club, as he was deemed unlikely to want to spend another season away from Europe’s elite competition. Both United and Real Madrid had been linked with a move for Bale, and it seems that the rumours of a move up north have resurfaced.

Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela remains David Moyes only signing during this transfer window so far, but the Daily Mirror reported this morning that a £60m offer could be submitted to try and tempt Tottenham to part with the 24-year-old.

It is believed that Bale is willing to stay in London for at least another season, but wants Tottenham to demonstrate their ambition that they can secure Champions League qualification this time round.

With former United star Cristiano Ronaldo wanting a move back to Old Trafford, it is a realistic possibility that both Bale and Ronaldo could turn-out in the same side in the not too distant future.

Andre Villas-Boas has already brought in Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, though fans are demanding that a new striker is signed following Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermaine Defoe’s less than prolific campaigns last term.

A move for another Brazilian, Leandro Damiao, had continued to be talked about for over two years now, but they face competition from Napoli for his signature after they sold Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain for £55m.
