From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to secure the futures of Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld over the next few weeks, with the star striker set to be offered a new deal and the defender’s representatives in line to meet with the club’s hierarchy.
While Kane’s case should be relatively straight forward, Alderweireld is a touch more complicated.
Kane current deal runs until 2022, having signed it at the end of 2016, but Spurs are eager to reward him with an agreement that better befits his value, along with protecting him against growing interest from some of the biggest clubs in the game.
They will thereby double his wages to around £200,000 a week with extra incentives on top of that. Sources say there may be still some issue over the length, as Spurs want to make it a seven-year deal.
Alderweireld’s contract meanwhile runs out in 2019. Spurs have the option to extend it until 2020, but that would trigger a clause that would allow him to leave for £25m during a brief window in the summer of 2019.
There is also the issue that the Belgian wants a contract that reflects his senior role in the team, not to mention the fact he is viewed as one of the best centre-halves in the world.
Alderweireld and his representatives will meet with Daniel Levy this weekend, and sources close to the player believe a new contract offer could be imminent.
Mauricio Pochettino recently moved to reassure fans over Alderweireld's future, telling them to trust in Levy.
