James McFadden is set to earn a one-year deal at Sunderland after impressing during a trial. The forward has been without a club since his contract at Everton expired in the summer.
The 29-year-old holds his own registration, which allows him to sign for clubs outside the transfer window and the Sunderland manager, Martin O'Neill, said: "I would look to do it [the transfer] until the end of the season. If he gets properly fit he can help us."
