Cash strapped Birmingham revealed recently that they would be willing to listen to offers for all their players, including star asset and England international Butland.
The 19-year-old has since been linked with a series of teams, including Chelsea, whom he reportedly refused to discuss a deal with because he wanted to play regular football.
Stoke have instead stolen in with a £5m bid.
The deal sees Butland immediately loaned back to the Championship club for the rest of the season.
The future of Asmir Begovic will now come under the spotlight.
The Bosnian has been linked with a £15m move to Manchester United, while Arsenal have also reportedly been showing interest in the 25-year-old stopper.
However the player is not expecting to move. He told Sky Sports News: "As far as I know (I am staying at Stoke), yes.
"I'm in for training today so I'm looking forward to staying and looking forward to the game at the weekend (Saturday's league trip to Arsenal).
"I don't see anything happening now. I think that time's passed. I'm just concentrating on what I need to do here."
