48-year-old Raiola help negotiate Paul Pogba’s world record £89m transfer from Juventus to Manchester United, and was also responsible for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining the Premier League club in Jose Mourinho’s first summer in charge at Old Trafford.
With Pogba becoming the world’s most expensive footballer – surpassing the £86m Gareth Bale cost Real Madrid when he left Tottenham in 2013 – Raiola landed a sizeable fee for his role in negotiating the deal, with Spanish newspaper AS reporting that the Dutch ‘superagent’ landed a staggering £16.8m from the deal.
However, the details of Pogba’s transfer remain undisclosed, and The Independent understands that Raiola may have made as much as £24m from the Pogba move alone, taking his summer earnings beyond the £30m mark.
The report adds that Raiola made €8m [£6.7m] from Mkhitaryan’s move from Borussia Dortmund, and €3m [£2.53m] from Ibrahimovic’s transfer, with the Swede joining as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. The total fee United paid Raiola stands at over £32m, with the world’s highest paid player, Cristiano Ronaldo, receiving €21m [£17.7m] each season at Real Madrid.
Having played second fiddle to Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes for a number of years in terms of transfer earnings, Raiola easily beat the Portuguese’s earnings, with his most notable negotiation being the one to take Mourinho to United as manager at the start of the summer in what proved to be a relatively quiet transfer window for Mendes.
Mendes is responsible for the likes of Ronaldo, James Rodrigues, Radamel Falcao and Pepe, though very few of his clients made transfers this summer with former United midfielder Nani being the highest profile player to switch clubs in his £7m move from Fenerbahce to Valencia.
