Jose Mourinho is not confident that Manchester United will add to their squad on transfer deadline day despite his desire for two new signings.

Mourinho claimed earlier this week that United could expect a “difficult” season if no additions arrived before Thursday’s 5.00pm deadline, with a centre-back prioritised.

United are understood to have held negotiations for Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

However, Mourinho does not believe United will be able to add to the signings of midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, young full-back Diogo Dalot and third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant.

“I’m not confident,” Mourinho said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. “The market closes today. It’s time at least for me to stop thinking about the market, because the market will be closed.

“I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation these first couple of matches – three matches – is to focus on the players that are available. I’m not thinking about the list of players.”

Asked whether he believed there would be any incomings or outgoings at Old Trafford on deadline day, Mourinho said: “The information I have is no.”
