Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic, according to reports.

The Sun have claimed this morning that the Croatian is set to replace Radamel Falcao, the misfiring Monaco loanee, while the Daily Mail add that United have been offered the option of signing the frontman from Atletico.

The 29-year-old only joined Atletico for £18.5m from Bayern Munich last summer, but Atletico are already prepared to sell the player.

He scored 20 goals in all competitions last season for the Spanish club, but all of those goals were scored before 21 February. He has since endured a barren spell of 12 matches without a goal, amid reports of bust-ups with members of the coaching staff.

Mandzukic could also be seen as a direct replacement for Robin van Persie. The Dutch striker has been linked with a move to Italian champions Juventus this summer, ending his three-year spell at Old Trafford.
