Fellaini was pictured at the Stadio Olimpico for Monday’s Serie A match between Roma and Napoli – a game that saw the Giallorossi triumph 1-0 and confirm Juventus’s status as Serie A champions for the fifth successive season – and his appearance fuelled rumours in Italy that a move is on the cards.
Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Roma would be willing to pay £15m for Fellaini, although that fee would represent a substantial loss on the £27m David Moyes paid his former club Everton to sign the Belgium international three years ago.
Fellaini has struggled to secure a regular first-team berth at United since moving to Old Trafford, and fans have proven reluctant in warming to the 28-year-old. That said, he scored the opener in United’s 2-1 FA Cup semi-final triumph over the Toffees at Wembley on Saturday and could yet feature in United’s plans next season – regardless of if Louis van Gaal is in charge or not.
Fellaini’s agent, Luciano D’Onofrio, has addressed the reports linking Fellaini to Roma, and while he confirmed that the Serie A club have not made any contact over a summer move, he did admit that is one that would appeal to the midfielder.
Addressing Fellaini’s attendance at the Roma match, D’Onofrio was quoted by Tuttomercatoweb as saying: “He was probably there on holiday. For the moment, I have no other news. So far I’ve had no contact with Roma for him.
“Would that move be acceptable? Yes, Roma is a possibility to consider.”
Roma are on the lookout for a new midfielder given that their current Belgium international, Radja Nainggolan, looks to be edging towards a move to Chelsea after a long-winded pursuit. Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is believed to have held official talks with Roma over a potential £28m transfer, with negotiations this week believed to have increased towards reaching a conclusion that will see the 27-year-old ply his trade at Stamford Bridge next season.
