Liverpool transfer news: Andros Townsend 'in high demand' as Reds express interest in Newcastle midfielder

The Newcastle winger has caught the attention of a number of Premier League sides

Andros Townsend has become a highly sought-after man with reports suggesting Liverpool have joined a list of Premier League sides contemplating making an offer for the winger.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle in January but strong interest has slowly gathered around the ex-Tottenham player after the Magpies were relegated in May.

Townsend's anticipated £10.5m buy-out clause has caught the eyes of Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham United who have all been linked with the winger.

Despite his exclusion from the 23-man England squad, Townsend has become hot-property within the Premier League and Newcastle now face a major challenge in holding onto one of their most prized possessions.

Reports suggest Jurgen Klopp is looking to add pace to his side at Anfield having already expressed interest in Southampton’s Saido Mane, Schalke’s Leroy Sane and Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.

But it seems likely Liverpool would struggle to sign one anyone of these players. Southampton would be unwilling to take anything under £30m for Mane while Manchester City are alleged to have already made a £40m bid for Sane.

At £10.5m and only 24 years of age, Townsend therefore represents good value for money and will have plenty more to offer given his age.

Townsend has yet to discuss his future at Newcastle though. The club are desperate to hold on to him and are willing to increase his £55,000-a-week wages in order to keep him at St James’ Park.

After joining from Tottenham in January for £12m, Townsend went on to score four goals in 13 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.
