From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Shane Long has been linked with a move to Anfield following the arrival of Charlie Austin at Southampton. The Sun claim that Saints could be open to letting the Republic of Ireland international depart for around £8m now that cover has been found. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently admitted he was seeking attacking reinforcements when he said: "We are always watching the offensive ends for what we can do." Long has scored five goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season.

Liverpool have seen their hopes of signing Granit Xhaka boosted after Borussia Monchengladbach admitted they could be open to selling the highly-rated midfielder. The 23-year-old only signed a fresh deal at his current club in February 2015 but sporting director Max Eberl said: "It depends a bit on our own sporting success, it depends on Granit's own performances and of course it depends on the figures. If they reach a certain level, then you could start to get dizzy. There are always situations in which every club would have to make considerations."

Another player who could be lured to Anfield is World Cup winner Mario Goetze. The 23-year-old former Borussia Dortmund midfielder has been linked with a reunion with Klopp and belief that Bayern Munich could sell increased when sporting director Matthias Sammer admitted they were in "no rush" to tie him to a new deal. A fee of around £37m has been mooted.

Liverpool v Manchester Utd - Match preview

Jamie Vardy will not be leaving Leicester City this month - that's been made abundantly clear by the Foxes. However, holding onto the England international in the summer might not be so easy, and according to reports today, they could be tempted by a £25m offer from Liverpool. The Star claim that the 29-year-old is seen as a 'modern day Ian Rush' on Merseyside.

Mario Balotelli could be in line for a shock return to the Premier League with the Brentwood Gazette reporting that West Ham are ready to bid £10m for the Liverpool striker. The Italy international is currently on loan at AC Milan, however the 25-year-old hasn't done much since returning to Serie A, making just three league appearances and scoring one goal. It seems he doesn't see his future at Anfield though, with a tweet backing the Reds to beat Manchester United referring to his "ex-team mates".
