Aaron Ramsey has no intention of leaving Arsenal in January as he clarifies contract situation

Midfielder was close to agreeing a new contract extension, only for the club to revoke their offer

Aaron Ramsey has no intention of leaving Arsenal in January despite his contract being due to expire at the end of the season.

Arsenal are believed to have withdrawn a new contract offer to the 27-year-old midfielder, meaning he will be free to leave the club when his current deal expires on June 30 next year.

Ramsey has been linked with a January departure from the Emirates Stadium, but he says he intends to see his contract out.

Asked if he will stay for the rest of the season, he replied: "Of course, yeah. I am contracted to Arsenal and I am going to do my best now this season to try and achieve something special.

"Everything has been going great with the club. We thought we were in a position where we had agreed a deal, but that's no longer the case.

"That's a decision that they have made and things happen in football. So I just have to carry on playing my football and do my best for Arsenal this season and I'll leave the rest with the club now.”

Ramsey joined Arsenal from Cardiff City in a £5 million deal in 2008 and has scored 59 goals in 338 appearances for the club, including two FA Cup final winners.

He was speaking after Wales’s 4-1 loss to Spain in a friendly at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Thursday.

Spain went 3-0 up inside the first 29 minutes and Ramsey said his side never recovered from their sloppy start.

“It was a tough game. Spain are a very good team and especially in the first 30 minutes, we got caught out,” he said.

"That was the most disappointing thing. We created a few opportunities on the back end of the first half and a couple in the second half, but we lost to the better team tonight.”

Wales manager Ryan Giggs, whose side face Ireland in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, was disappointed with his team’s defending and Ramsey said the former Manchester United midfielder had made his displeasure clear at half-time.

“I think he let us know what he thought of the situation,” Ramsey said. “But I'm not going to reveal what was said in the dressing room."
