Five-year-old Celtic fan rings club to apologise after missing his side's Saturday game against Motherwell

Because of a scheduled birthday party, Celtic fan Louis Kayes was unable to watch his team play at the weekend

For most fans, the experience of missing out on your side play can be a disappointing one. But for five-year-old Celtic fan Louis Kayes, it’s an altogether different story.

After missing his side run out against Motherwell at the weekend – because it clashed with a friend’s birthday party – the youngster proceeded to ring Celtic to apologise for his absence.

Worried that his favourite player, Scott Brown, might have missed him at the game, Louis borrowed his mother’s phone to get hold of the club.

Lisa Kayes, Louis’ mum, told BBC Scotland her son had called following a “bit of a guilt trip”.

"He was in the living room with my phone and then I heard the voicemail message from Celtic Park saying 'thank you for calling'," she said.

“Before I knew it I heard him telling the club that he wouldn’t be at the match because he had to go to his friend’s birthday party.

“I said: ‘What are you doing? You’ll be costing me a fortune.’ But he just said he was letting Celtic know the reason why he wouldn’t be at the match.

“I had just spent a while explaining to him that because of the birthday party he wouldn’t be able to go.

“He wasn’t happy about it and I think he was just wanting to explain to Celtic the reason for his absence.

Lisa explained that Louis had also wanted to speak to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

"He wanted to let both of them know he'd missed it in case they were looking for him," she said.

Louis himself told BBC Scotland that while the party had been “good”, he would definitely be present for Wednesday evening’s Champions League fixture against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Ms Kayes added: "He's possibly the most passionate five-year-old I know in terms of supporting Celtic. He doesn't like to miss a game.

"I think Celtic-Motherwell is the last home game he'll miss in a while. I don't think we'll be getting him to many other things on a Saturday afternoon."

Luckily for Louis, his side went on to beat Motherwell 2-0 after Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele fired the home side to victory.
