Jose Mourinho started his Manchester United reign with a 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic on Saturday, with goals from Will Keane and Andreas Pereira sinking the Championship side.

It was the performance of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, however, that got fans’ tongues wagging.

The Armenia international is one of the club’s three summer signings, having arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £26.3m earlier this month, following the captures of Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mkhitaryan pulled on a United shirt for the first time after being named in the starting line-up at the DW Stadium and produced an exciting first-half display, full of skill and flair.

The 27-year-old midfielder was taken off at half-time, but only after playing so well that some supporters questioned Wayne Rooney’s future in the United side.

Here’s the best of the social media reaction...

Mkhitaryan will have another chance to impress in United's second pre-season friendly against Dortmund, his former club, on Friday.
