From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Manchester United now look certain to qualify for the Champions League, although should they finish the campaign in fourth they will face a two-legged play-off tie in order to advance to the group stage.

Liverpool could mathematically still catch Louis van Gaal's side, although it would take two defeats for United and two wins for Liverpool, plus a 13-goal swing in goal difference. Meanwhile United could still catch Manchester City and Arsenal above them if results go their way.

However fourth place looks the likeliest position United will finish, meaning they will be playing a European opponent at the end of August for the right to enter the Champions League proper. So who might that be?

10 teams will be involved in the final play-offs, with the fourth-placed teams from La Liga and Bundesliga joining those who finish third in Italy and Portugal.

The other five will come from the winners of the third qualifying round which could potentially include the third-placed team in France plus the runners-up from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

When the draw is made on August 7, the 10 sides will be split with five of them seeded based on their Uefa coefficient. Manchester United can expect to be among the top seeds which should see them avoid the toughest opponents.

The final league positions around the continent are yet to be determined, but here we take a look at those in contention...

Spain: Valencia or Sevilla (4th qualifies for final play-off round)

Germany: Bayer Leverkusen (4th qualifies for final play-off round)

Italy: Roma, Lazio or Napoli (3rd qualifies for final play-off round)

Portugal: Sporting Lisbon (3rd qualifies for final play-off round)

Netherlands: Ajax (2nd qualifies for third play-off round)

France: Lyon, Monaco or Marseille (3rd qualifies for third play-off round)

Russia: FK Krasnodar or CSKA Moscow (2nd qualifies for third play-off round)

Ukraine: Shakhtar Donetsk or Dnipro (2nd qualifies for third play-off round)

Turkey: Galatasaray, Fenerbahce or Besiktas (2nd qualifies for third play-off round)

The final play-off ties will be played on 18/19 August and 25/26 August.
