Farewell to Upton Park marred by fan unrest

West Ham fans ripped seats and hoardings from the Boleyn Ground last night to take home as souvenirs.

The Premier League club were playing their last ever game at the stadium in Upton Park before taking up residence at the Olympic Stadium from next season.

It seemed a few fans in attendance were keen for a souvenir from the occasion and pulled plastic seats from the 112-year-old stadium.

Images showed a few chairs had been removed and others had been twisted and broken in failed attempts to steal them.

Meanwhile images posted on social media showed fans bundling a sign several metres long, directing visitors to the Boleyn to the Sir Trevor Brooking stand, onto a train after the match.

The embarrassing acts of vandalism followed those of violence witnessed before the match when supporters pelted the Manchester United team bus with missiles.

The match itself was a fitting finale for the stadium with West Ham beating Manchester United 3-2. The game was then followed by a farewell ceremony that saw a number of former fan favourites, including Paolo Di Canio, return to say goodbye.
