Transfer news: Jose Mourinho 'calm' over pursuit of Wayne Rooney - 10 days after Manchester United rejected bid from Chelsea

Manager says Chelsea is 'happy with what we have' - despite making a big money bid for the England striker

Jose Mourinho said today that he was “calm” about the prospect of signing Wayne Rooney ten days after Chelsea’s first bid for the player was rejected by Manchester United, as the London club finished their three-game tour of Asia with a third victory.

Asked whether he had any news on players coming into the club, Mourinho said: “No, at this moment we have made [in terms of offers] what you know. That bid which was public and official and after that nothing else. But we are calm as we told you that we are calm because we are happy with what we have.”

Nevertheless, the expectation is that there will be a new bid for Rooney soon with the player Mourinho’s priority signing before the season begins. If a deal for Rooney is done then the club will sell either Fernando Torres or Demba Ba, with Romelu Lukaku the only striker currently in the first team squad who is certain not to leave.

Of Mourinho’s three strikers, Lukaku has made the greatest impact on tour scoring twice again last night to take his total to four goals in three games, in which he has played just a half in each. Chelsea were far too strong for the Indonesia All-Stars XI whom they beat 8-1 with two goals from Ramires and the others from Eden Hazard’s penalty, John Terry, Demba Ba and 17-year-old Bertrand Traore.

Asked about the potential effect on Torres’ status, Mourinho said: “Fernando should be happy because we have competition in the team and I think that is good for everybody in every position. I think Fernando will be pleased because during of his time at Chelsea he was basically the only striker and then there was the arrival of Ba in January. Now the team has three strikers and I think that is good.”

There was praise from Mourinho for Terry who missed so much of last season with injury but has started every one of the three games in Thailand, Malaysia and today in Jakarta. Mourinho said: “He played well and trained very well and never missed one minute of any training session. That is very important because he is a very important player for us.

“He has trained very hard for 15 days and most of the days with two sessions so that is more than three hours of training a day. Then he played well for us in all three matches. He has finished playing well again. I am very happy with him.”

The club have also been told by the Premier League that their home fixture against Aston Villa has been moved forward to 21 August to accommodate their European Super Cup game against Bayern Munich which is on 30 August. It means that should Chelsea win their first three games, the third being against Manchester United on 26 August, they will be six points ahead of the champions.

Mourinho said: “It is a difficult week of three matches in a row which is never easy, especially at the start of the season. But I think it is fair. Because of us playing the Super Cup and Aston Villa with their calendar, it would not have been fair to play this game one month or two months later. It is logical to play it the start of the season, even though it is difficult for us and Villa. But it is better like this than to have moved it back.

“We have to play every game against everybody. I am never that bothered about the fixtures and the calendar – when we play home and when we play away – against our rivals. I am not worried about that. We will try to win against Hull and then against Villa and then take things match by match.

Chelsea will return home overnight and will be back at their Cobham training base until Tuesday when they leave for the United States for a four-match tournament that will be their last preparation before the Premier League season begins. The club will be based in Washington DC playing four games, starting with Inter Milan in Indianapolis on Thursday, and then matches in New York, Miami and Washington.
