Steven Gerrard 'in contact' with Jurgen Klopp but has received no Liverpool offer yet

The Liverpool icon has made it clear he has no immediate plans to join Jurgen Klopp - but he did not rule out a return at a later stage

Steven Gerrard has declared his support for current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp but has insisted he does not currently intend to return to Anfield in a coaching position.

The 36-year-old is approaching his “twilight” years and is widely expected to retire once his current contract at LA Galaxy expires at the end of the season.

For some, the prospect of retirement will usher in the possibility of coaching which so many of the game’s greats have turned to in their post-professional lives.

Gerrard has already been linked with a return to Liverpool but the Anfield icon downplayed the possibility of joining current boss Jurgen Klopp – at least for now.

“People need to understand that Jurgen Klopp is his own man, he’s got his own team of people around him, that he is very happy and content with,” Gerrard told virtual reality company Laduma.

"There’s no future decision to work with Klopp, I get on really well with him, we’re in contact but there’s no job opportunity there at the moment.

“There’s nothing for me to say on the matter really, only that I’m a big fan of him. I hope he brings success back to Liverpool next season and I’ll be supporting him from over here.

“If I had something to say I wouldn’t keep supporters waiting.”

Despite downplaying it, Gerrard did not rule out the possibility of a potential return though.

Fans will also be delighted to hear that the former England international stills admits that he has a “huge Liverpool connection” that could surely one day bring him back to Anfield.

“Of course, I’ve got a huge Liverpool connection and Liverpool is in my heart and always will be, but there’s nothing to really comment on,” he said.

Gerrard also touched upon Liverpool’s decision to redevelop Anfield with a new Main Stand as opposed to moving out of the club’s historic Merseyside home.

“It’s my favourite stadium,” he said. "Those fans are very unique and special; they follow the team all over the world in the numbers. Some of the atmospheres I’ve played in at Anfield are difficult to describe, the noise and the passion and the atmosphere.

As for his immediate future at LA Galaxy, Gerrard has made it clear that he is approaching the end but remains eager “to try and enjoy every last moment”.

“I know I’m in the twilight, I know I’m coming to the end pretty soon,” he remarked.

“The one thing I’m going to miss - walking on to the pitch. I’m going to miss that buzz very, very much because that’s what I play the game for.”
