Southampton have confirmed that the red card issued to centre-back Jan Bednarek has been rescinded.

The Polish defender was dismissed in the closing stages of the heavy 9-0 defeat to Manchester United during the week, which came after teenager Alexandre Jankewitz was sent-off just two minutes into the game.

Saints appealed the red card, however, and the FA have now overturned the decision, the club confirmed.

The FA statement said "the defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity", with both the VAR and a pitchside monitor review by referee Mike Dean leaving the dismissal in place at the time.

Following the record-equalling defeat, Saints dropped to 12th place in the table and have lost four successive league matches.

Southampton also lost 9-0 against Leicester last season but, despite suffering defeat in their next two fixtures after that, bounced back to improve significantly. The same resolve will be needed to get themselves back on the right track and into the top half of the table after this loss.

They play Newcastle away at the weekend before facing Wolves in the FA Cup fifth round.
