Sam Allardyce said West Ham United would appeal ‘immediately’ against the red card awarded against Adrian, their goalkeeper, during the goalless draw at St Mary’s. Allardyce added he would be ‘very disappointed’ if the appeal is not granted.

Adrian was sent off after handling the ball outside his area after losing control of a backpass when pressed by Saido Mane. “It was a foul on the goalkeeper before he handled the ball, Mane has his hands all over Adrian,” said Allardyce. “He should have kicked it out but Mane had two hands on his back. We will appeal. I will be very disappointed if we don’t get it rescinded.”

With Jussi Jaskelainen making his first appearance since a Capital One Cup match in August West Ham held on to gain a point despite effectively playing out the game with nine men as Andy Carroll was injured and all substitutes had been used.

“It feels like a victory against all the odds,” said Allardyce. “The lads on the field did a fantastic job. Everything was against us. It could not have gone any worse. But we coped with it brilliantly and got a very valuable point. I just hope Andy did not make things worse by staying on.”

Carroll, who left the ground on crutches, has aggravated the knee injury that recently kept him out for two-and-a-weeks, A longer spell on the sidelines is now anticipated, probably four weeks.

Ronald Koeman, Southampton manager, said it was a ’frustrating night. “If you are the better team, with more possession, more chances, and you play 25 minutes 11 against ten you expect to score at least once, and we didn’t,” he said. “In the last few games creating chances and scoring goals is a little bit more of a struggle than in the first part of the season.”

The reason for this blank was, he said, too little width in attack, and ‘a lack of sharpness in the box’. As for the dismissal, unsurprisingly he saw it differently to his West Ham counterpart. “It was a red card. A good decision,” said Koeman.
