Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Jan Koller last night showed why Manchester City's manager Joe Royle is so keen to lure him to Maine Road as he scored a hat-trick to help Anderlecht to a 4-2 win against Anorthosis Famagusta in a Champions' League second round, first leg qualifier in Brussels.

Ironically, however, Koller's goals reduce Royle's chances of signing the Czech Republic striker as Anderlecht will be less likely to sell him if they receive the extra money involved in qualifying for the Champions' League proper.

Anderlecht got off to a great start against the Cypriot champions as Walter Baseggio's early free-kick gave them the lead. The Cypriots equalised through Ntegian Pavlovits before Koller grabbed three goals to put the home side in control. The visitors earned a glimmer of hope with a late strike from Nikodimos Papavasiliou.

Shelbourne, the Dublin side, have much to do if they are to make further Champions' League progress after their 3-1 defeat by Rosenborg at Tolka Park last night.

The Norwegians took the lead after just 98 seconds when Orjan Berg shot home. Rosenborg stretched their lead after 15 minutes when Fredrik Winsnes finished from 10 yards before Richie Foran scored to give Shelbourne hope. Rosenborg, however, had the final say in the 89th minute when Petter Belsvik scored on the break.

Red Star Belgrade fans clashed with riot police in a Champions' League match against Georgia's Torpedo Kutaisi last night. Fighting broke out midway through the first half when police moved into the crowd as they chanted anti-government slogans.

Robbie Keane scored against his old club, Wolves, in a friendly at Molineux last night. Coventry's £6m signing hit the target three minutes after coming on as a substitute to give Coventry a 1-0 victory. The Republic of Ireland international cut in from the wing on 61 minutes, beat two defenders before firing home.
