From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Liverpool were warned by the Basle striker Julio Hernan Rossi yesterday that the Swiss side would go all out for victory in next week's Champions' League match. A draw from Tuesday's game would put Basle into the second group stage but Liverpool would be out if they did not win.

Tuesday night's 2-0 success for Basle against Spartak Moscow set up the decider and Rossi, who struck the first goal in the Russian capital, said: "Now it's important that we play to win in the final home match against Liverpool. We mustn't have it in the back of our minds that a draw will do."

Rossi said of the Moscow performance, which came amid driving snow: "We played really well. We suffered somewhat due to the cold, and the pitch was hard to play on, too. Spartak had two good chances but I think our win was merited. Qualification would be great for Swiss football."

Rossi's team-mate, Murat Yakin, added: "We were very good in defence and earned that victory. We're on a high at the moment, playing with confidence and every chance is a dangerous goal chance. Now comes the highlight match at home against Liverpool.

"The fact that we can reach the next round without depending on other results is fantastic. I believe that Basle and all of Switzerland are looking forward to this match."
