Robin van Persie has backed "fantastic" former team-mate Radamel Falcao to rediscover his best form.

The Colombian Falaco endured a disappointing season on loan from Monaco at Manchester United, scoring just four goals in a campaign blighted by injury and loss of form.

Falcao has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Chelsea in this transfer window and Van Persie says that he has no doubt that the 29-year-old will be back to his best.

United manager Louis van Gaal said at the end of the season that Falcao's deal would not be made permanent.

"I've got a lot of respect for Falcao," said Van Persie.

"In any position he was used, he kept doing his best, training extra hard. That's what a real professional does. Falcao is a fantastic football player. He'll always come back on top."

Van Persie, meanwhile, has cast serious doubt over his United future, saying he and the club must evaluate the situation.

The Dutch striker, who is currently with the Netherlands squad in Amsterdam ahead of a friendly with the United States, has admitted that he could move on.

"The club must do its homework and so must I. It's a new situation," he told reporters.

"I'm going to calmly and relaxed sit down and consider everything.

"I still have ambitions of playing every week. I feel top fit and I think I can still go on for several years. Take note of my words," said the player who moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in 2012.
