Merseyside Police were quoted as saying they had spoken to several witnesses about the incident in which the 17-year-old England striker is alleged to have spat on the pitch in front of the Liverpool supporters during Everton's 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park.
"We are aware of an incident. We now have sufficient witnesses and do not need any more to come forward," a police spokesman said. "We will be making inquiries as soon as possible and liaising with both clubs."
An Everton spokesman said the club would not make a comment until officials had spoken to the police. The game, which saw two Everton players sent off, was also marred by trouble outside the ground after the final whistle, although police reported no arrests.
