Newcastle United have lost eight successive Premier League matches since Alan Shearer's advert for Barclays aired.

The advert, which is regularly shown during coverage of Premier League football, shows the club legend recalling the first match he attended at St. James' Park and becoming quite misty-eyed about a pie.

Shearer, who oversaw the club's last relegation as manager in 2008, is then shown giving pairs of free tickets to young Newcastle fans on their doorsteps.

It first appeared on television on the evening of February 28, hours afters the club won its last three points in a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Since then, Newcastle have plummeted down the league table. John Carver's side have conceded 18 goals in that time and scored only four.

The Magpies' miserable season sunk to a new low during their 3-0 defeat to Leicester City last weekend, after which Carver alleged that defender Mike Williamson had deliberately sought out to be sent off.

Williamson, who saw red for a robust challenge on Jamie Vardy that sent the Foxes' forward flying into a television camera, has since defended himself against his manager's allegations.

The club now sit in 15th position and face a struggle to keep their heads above water, with fixtures against West Bromwich Albion, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United remaining.

Supporters, needing something to cheer them up, recently spoofed Shearer's advert. A group of disgruntled fans replaced the smiling children with adults who decline Shearer's tickets using some fairly strong language.
