From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

John Metgod is joining English Premier League team Portsmouth as manager Tony Adams' assistant, according to Dutch club Feyenoord.

"This is a challenge I can't ignore," said Metgod, who is a scout with Feyenoord.

Adams was appointed last month following Harry Redknapp's move to Tottenham. Adams and Metgod previously worked together coaching junior teams at Feyenoord.

The 50-year-old Metgod, who played four seasons in England for Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, said he was looking forward to joining Adams' staff.

"Tony Adams is an icon of the British game, but the way he thinks about football is strongly influenced by the Netherlands school," Metgod said. "Tony called me on Friday morning to ask if I wanted to be first team coach at Portsmouth. The chance of working with him and returning to the top flight in England really appeals to me."

Adams got his first win since replacing Redknapp last Saturday when Jermain Defoe converted a 90th-minute penalty to beat Sunderland 2-1. Portsmouth is in ninth place in the league.
