The arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager has frustrated the former United midfielder, who has served as assistant manager at the club for the past two seasons under Louis van Gaal. Giggs believes that he has served his apprenticeship at Old Trafford and should have been given the chance to prove himself as United manager, but Mourinho was unveiled as manager a fortnight ago to throw Giggs’ future into doubt.
Varying reports have emerged regarding Giggs’s plans, with suggestions that he could end his 29-year association with United – which has included playing for the academy and the first-team before being named interim manager and later assistant to Van Gaal – yet to be confirmed.
According to the Daily Mail though, United have made their move in the hope of keeping Giggs at the club under Mourinho’s tenure. Mourinho will bring in his regular No 2 in Rui Faria, but it’s claimed that United have said that Giggs can have any other role should he wish to stay.
The new job could yet be seen as a demotion by Giggs given that he was second in command of the first team during Van Gaal’s reign, but at present the Welshman is yet to make his decision. The 42-year-old recently returned from a holiday in Dubai, but club officials are keen not to rush Giggs and are willing to give him as long as he needs before deciding his future.
One factor that could result in Giggs remaining under Mourinho – at least for the short-term – is the lack of attractive manager jobs currently available. Everton are on the lookout for a new manager and are in advanced talks with Ronald Koeman, meaning that Southampton could be potential destination for Giggs.
But other vacancies appear slim given that the Aston Villa job has been filled by Roberto Di Matteo, with Rafa Benitez staying on at Newcastle. Other current Championship roles at Reading and Nottingham Forest are being heavily linked with former United defender Jaap Stam and Chelsea forward Gianfranco Zola respectively.
Another influential reason for Giggs to remain at United is the advice coming from his close friends, who have reminded the footballer-turned-coach that the opportunity to learn from Mourinho should not be immediately dismissed given the level of knowledge he could learn from the Portuguese.
