Manchester United have, somewhat belatedly, released their squad photo for the 2016/17 season, but there are two key omissions from the image.

The first is the absence of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was exiled to train with the under-23s after Jose Mourinho decided he was not going to be in his first team plans this season.

The other noticeable omission from the photo is the FA Cup, which Louis van Gaal won last season and the first major trophy of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

However, the Community Shield, which was won in Mourinho’s first competitive game in charge of the Red Devils, is included in the picture.

All 26 members of Mourinho’s first-team squad are included, as well as the backroom staff, with the United boss flanked by captain Wayne Rooney and vice-captain Michael Carrick in the middle.

Schweinsteiger is set to leave Old Trafford this season, with a move to the MLS the most likely destination.

The World Cup winner’s treatment by Mourinho has brought scathing comments from former and current German internationals who believe Schweinsteiger should still be a first-team regular.

The 32-year-old was in attendance for United’s 1-0 EFL Cup victory over rivals Manchester City on Wednesday night.
