Louis van Gaal is waiting to find out whether Robin van Persie's ankle injury is serious after the Manchester United striker underwent an assessment on Monday.

Van Persie was injured in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Sunday and was unable to travel to the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Switzerland, despite being one of three nominations for the Puskas Award for best goal of the year.

The striker is one of four United players currently injured. Young defender remains a long-term concern but right-back Rafael, who has a fractured cheekbone, is expected to return soon after he had an operation; the Brazilian has been training in a protective mask.

Ashley Young is expected to be out for another month with a hamstring injury, but Louis van Gaal had good news on Luke Shaw and Angel Di Maria.

The pair, who were substituted during the defeat, are both fine but "need rhythm", according to the United boss.

James Rodriguez eventually won the Puskas Award for his volley against Uruguay in the World Cup, ahead of Van Persie's header against Spain and Stephanie Roche's volley.
