From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Despite being the most expensive player on the planet and playing for the reigning Champions League holders, Gareth Bale is not at the top of the majority of supporters' wish lists.
The Wales international, who has endured a difficult second season at the Bernabeu following his departure from the Premier League, has been strongly tipped to switch to Old Trafford this summer.
However, according to a poll for 90min.com, Manchester United fans would rather see their club sign Mats Hummels.
The Borussia Dortmund defender has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer and it seems that if such a transfer transpired, it would delight fans of the Red Devils more than any other potential arrival.
According to the poll, in which nearly 25,000 fans participated, 54 per cent would most like to see Hummels in the famous red shirt. Bale picked up 24 per cent of the vote.
Among the other options were Nathaniel Clyne, Kevin Strootman, Ilkay Gundogan and Edinson Cavani, who picked up between 3 and 7 per cent of the vote each.
The keenness of Manchester United supporters to see defensive reinforcements arrive at the club might suggest a perceived lack of quality in the centre-back positions, an area of concern since Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left the club. However criticism of the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans might be harsh considering United enjoy the joint-third best defensive record in the Premier League.
