Manchester City have an opportunity to put the pressure on Liverpool when they play Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

City will go top if they beat Brighton, at least for a few hours with Chelsea and Liverpool playing at 5:30pm.

The champions come off the back of a 3-0 win at Oxford United in the League Cup, and a 5-0 thrashing at Cardiff City last week, where Riyad Mahrez scored his first goals for the club.

Brighton have stuttered following their 3-2 win over Manchester United in August. Chris Hughton’s men haven’t won a game since, and after a 2-1 home defeat to Tottenham last week lie in 13th place with five points from six matches.

Was called into action early in the match and made a good save to stop Sterling scoring from range. Made a few good saves afterwards.

Ryan Bennett - 6

Comically blocked Ederson’s attempts to launch a quick counter attack, also defended well.

Conor Coady - 7

Marshalled his defence well and had to deal with the intelligence of Aguero as well as Sterling’s pace in behind. Headed clear some very good deliveries from set-pieces.

Willy Boly - 8

Handed Wolves the lead with what initially looked like a header from a cross, but replays showed he used his arm to direct the ball in. Made a superb goal saving tackle to prevent Bernardo Silva from walking the ball into the net at the end of the first half.

Matt Doherty - 6

Had Benjamin Mendy to contend with on his side and stopping the left-back, who has started the Premier League in emphatic style, was a tall order for Doherty. However, while Mendy did get into some good areas, he did a good job to limit how often this happened.

Joao Moutinho - 5

Still looks like there is more to come from the Portuguese international, and he looked a little lost against City.

Ruben Neves - 7

Made the highest number of tackles in the game, and was equally useful to Wolves going forward. His range of incisive passing was key to Wolves’ attack, against City you have to be quick on the ball and Neves perfectly held together attacking moves.

Jonny Castro Otta - 6

Struggled to get involved in attacking moves and spent most of the game chasing Walker on Wolve’s left side of midfield.

Helder Costa - 7

Should have done better to beat Ederson when he was through one-on-one but had an effort saved. Embarked on a stunning run which included barging Mendy off the ball before finding Neves on the edge of the box.

Diogo Jota - 7

The way to get at this Manchester City side is to attack them with pace and purpose, Jota certainly did that and gave the defenders plenty to think about.

Raul Jimenez - 7

Had the ball in the back of the net to round off a well worked move but his effort was ruled out for offside. Gave the City defence plenty to think about all game.

Ederson - 6

Wolves preventing him from distributing the ball early at the start of the game by infringing him when he had the ball in his hands. That’s a new way to deal with his superb range of passing from the back, but it seemed to work. Stayed standing when Costa had a one-on-one chance and saved well.

Kyle Walker - 5

Was not able to get forward as much as he may have liked and was often caught high up the pitch by Diogo Jota, who got in behind the right-back several times.

Vincent Kompany - 6

Was pressed onto several mistakes at the back which led to passes being intercepted. Was slightly short of his brilliant best today. Had a sight at goal with a header from a corner but got under the ball and his effort went over. Produced a bit of goal saving defending to clear a late cross.

Aymeric Laporte - 7

Nobody was going to stop Laporte getting to Gunodgan’s cross and drawing City level. He charged through a crowded penalty area and met the ball with a bullet header which gave Patricio no chance.

Benjamin Mendy - 7

Some of his crossed from the left wing were exceptional. City are not blessed with tall and powerful forwards, however his low, driven passes from wide areas gave the strikers plenty to work with in the middle. Was however pulled up for a foul throw, come on Benjamin.

Fernandinho -6

Often so good at breaking up counter attacks before they happen, Wolves did well to launch their breaks with Fernandinho caught high up the pitch.

Ilkay Gundogan - 6

Took it in turns with Fernandinho to drop deep and dictate play. Pep Guardiola has been keen to get him playing as the holding midfielder and he showed that he can do that jobs in games like today. Provided a great cross from a free kick towards Laporte who equalised.

Bernardo Silva - 6

Linked up play very well and was unlucky not to score just before half time when he was dispossessed in the box by an excellent last-ditch tackle.

Raheem Sterling - 7

Back to his usual menacing self. Had a well hit shot from range well saved by Patricio and caused the Wolves defence problems all game.

David Silva - 6

Silva seems to get better each season and has started another Premier League as one of the best midfielders in the land. Against Wolves even he was struggling to find space in a crowded midfield which meant he was less influential than he has been in previous games.

Sergio Aguero - 7

Nearly scored in the first half with a low curling effort but his strike hit the post and went wide. Had a couple of chances late on but did not trouble the defence like he did before the break.

It’s a big game for…

Beram Kayal. The Brighton midfielder signed a one-year contract extension today, and is likely to come into the team on Saturday to replace the injured Dale Stephens. With fellow midfielder Davy Propper also sidelined, ex-Celtic man Kayal will have to hit the ground running against a formidable Manchester City side full of possession-domineering players.

34: Manchester City have lost only once in their last 34 Premier League home matches. That was in April, when they lost 3-2 to neighbours Manchester United.

Player to watch…

Bernardo Silva: The left-footed 24-year-old has been City’s standout player so far this season, expertly filling the void left by Kevin De Bruyne’s injury. The Portuguese playmaker, in his second season at the club, has two Premier League goals to his name, and his creativity and class will make life difficult for Brighton’s defence on Saturday.
