Vincent Kompany has warned Manchester City’s challengers that the reigning champions are a different breed from their 2012 and 2014 predecessors and will not become complacent in the defence of their crown.

City are aiming to be the first team since 2009 to retain the Premier League title and dominate English football’s landscape, having failed to maintain success over multiple seasons in the past.

After their memorable title win under Roberto Mancini in 2012, City finished 11 points behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United the following season. Mancini left the club that summer.

Their second Premier League title triumph in 2014, under Manuel Pellegrini, was followed by another runners-up finish, eight points behind champions Chelsea. City finished fourth in Pellegrini’s third and final year.

Kompany is one of three members of the current City squad to have been present for all three of City’s Premier League title wins and admits that Mancini and Pellegrini’s champions underwhelmed.

Under Pep Guardiola, though, City’s captain feels he and his team-mates are better prepared to put up a successful defence and together, they will avoid the pitfalls of previous years.

“I can only say it’s different from previous years we have won the league,” Kompany said. “I think everyone has been warned enough as well. No team in the last nine seasons has been able to repeat and win the league.

“There’s been so many warnings we have had and every single time we almost have to fight against ourselves and our nature, not to fall in the same trap as the other teams have done, my teams included a few years ago.”

Kompany believes the depth of talent in City’s squad will be beneficial in more ways than one. “I can see that everyone is training hard. There’s so much competition in the team that we have to anyway,” he added.

“If I can say one thing you are never guaranteed to win the league, but if we can compete then we will have done something what no other team has done since the last nine years.”

City’s sheer dominance last year suggests they have more than enough quality to defend the title and Guardiola is sure to come down hard on any signs of complacency.

Kompany does not expect arrogance to become a problem but admits he will only be able to tell as the season progresses.

“Not with this team,” he said, when asked whether complacency could set in, “but you never know until you have done it.

“Many players win the league for the first time and they come back and it’s something you have to feel, to see in their eyes if things have changed or not.

“I’m not saying we are going to do as well as we did last year, but if it happens that the season is going to be different then it has to be because of the other teams being stronger, not us being weaker.”
