However few expected the Dutchman was so cock-a-hoop that he would break into song in the post-match press conference.
But that's exactly what the unpredictably Manchester United manager did.
Informing the assembled media of his age - Van Gaal said: "Sixty-four." He continued: "The Beatles have a song. You know that? Sixty-four. When I'm 64. When you hear what they are singing, all my wishes are fulfilled."

Van Gaal's side were somewhat fortunate to beat Spurs on Saturday lunchtime, with a disjointed display resulting in three points thanks to Kyle Walker's own goal.
Manchester United's next match is against Aston Villa.
