Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool have “no intention” of sanctioning a deal for Xherdan Shaqiri in the January window after already rebuffing approaches from Roma and Sevilla.

The clubs had enquired over a loan agreement for the 28-year-old, who is currently nursing a calf issue, but is expected to return to training later this week.

The Switzerland international has been restricted to three starts this season and while Klopp has been an advocate of allowing players to leave in order to gain regular minutes, the manager has to put the interests of the league leaders before that of any individual mid-season.

“We had in the majority of December and January a bench full of kids,” the German explained at Melwood.

“Wonderful kids, but kids so how could we think about giving a player to anyone? I don't understand that.

“It's not about Shaq, it's pretty much everybody.

“We just have to keep them for sorting our situation and not the situation for different clubs. If someone came around the corner and asked properly... but that didn't happen.

“Maybe they are desperate or whatever, but there is absolutely no intention from our side to do anything.”

Liverpool would consider allowing Shaqiri to depart in the summer for a fee in the region of £25 million.

The two-time Champions League winner moved to Anfield from Stoke City in July 2018 after his £13m release clause was triggered.
