Karius made a costly error in his side’s 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth last weekend which allowed Nathan Ake to score a stoppage-time winner.
The 23-year-old’s display was criticised by both Neville and Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool defender, who analysed Liverpool’s defeat for Sky Sports.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Karius spoke publicly about his error for the first time and claimed that while he accepted Carragher’s criticism, he did not to care for Neville’s.
“He was a top player, then he was a manager for a short bit and now he is back to being an expert again,” Karius said, in an apparent dig at Neville's failed managerial stint at Valencia.
“But he is always very critical,” Karius added. “I think he does it to everyone. I just hope that when I do well he will comment on that. We will see in the future.”
Neville responded to Karius on Friday night by issuing a sarcastic apology to the Liverpool goalkeeper on his Instagram page.
The former Manchester United full-back shared quotes from Carragher’s criticism of Karius with the message: “My sincere apologies Karius. You're right. A failed manager hasn't a clue. I won't copy your great fan, pundit and club legend again.”
Karius will have the opportunity to atone for his error this weekend, with Jurgen Klopp set to retain his services in goal for West Ham United’s visit to Anfield on Sunday.
