Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet insists he will continue to fight for his place at Anfield

Simon Mignolet has insisted that he will continue to fight for his place at Liverpool despite uncertainty over his Anfield future.

Mignolet has played just twice since the turn of the year following Jürgen Klopp’s decision to make Loris Karius his first-choice goalkeeper.

The 30-year-old Belgium international admitted in January that his situation was an “unhealthy” one with the World Cup on the horizon, though stayed put beyond the transfer deadline.

Mignolet has continued to be linked with a move away from Merseyside but, ahead of Belgium’s friendly against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night, he claimed he will work to win his starting spot back.

“Always the only thing you try to do is prove every time in training you are ready for when the chance comes along,” he said.

“It is never easy of course because I have never in my career spent time on the bench, but it is how it is and the only thing you can do is try to change it, but it is never easy.”

Mignolet, whose last appearance came in January’s FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion, revealed that he has spoken with Klopp about his lack of minutes.

“I’ve had a few conversations with the manager already and we have spoken about numerous things.

“You always have to be ready for when the chance comes along,” Mignolet added.

“That’s the only thing I can do so I try to stay professional in training, try to work as hard as I can, show that I’m ready for whenever the chance happens.”

Mignolet is expected to start for his country on Tuesday night, with first-choice ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois missing due to a muscle injury.
