Jurgen Klopp missed Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland to undergo surgery to have his appendix removed.

The operation is thought to have been a success and the German will spend the weekend reovering before the Reds' trip to West Ham United on Tuesday night. It is unclear if he will attend the FA Cup fourth round reply at Upton Park.

Adam Johnson and Jermane Defoe cancelled out earlier strikes by Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana to make it a frustrating day for the Merseyside club.

Zeljko Buvac, the first assistant coach, took charge of the team this afternoon in Klopp's absence alongside Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and John Achterberg.

An official statement said: "Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp will be absent from today's Barclays Premier League fixture against Sunderland at Anfield, after suffering a suspected bout of appendicitis.

"First-team duties will be overseen by the remaining members of the coaching staff, including Zeljko Buvac, Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and John Achterberg."
