From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

King's current contract does not expire until 2008 and the club are determined to extend his stay at White Hart Lane for much longer, and ensure he does not walk away on a free transfer like Sol Campbell, who joined rivals Arsenal in 2001.

The England defender has rejected Tottenham's initial offer but Jol said: "Everybody is entitled to get a good deal and he is trying to do that.

"If he signs he will be better off and if he is not signing he will be in the same situation. He will still be here for at least next season.

"I expect it to be sorted out before the end of the season. We want to keep him and he wants to stay here. He has told me that. It is a matter of negotiating but it is not a problem."

Jol is also hopeful the Egyptian striker Mido, currently on loan from Roma, will finally join the club on a permanent basis before the end of the season.
