Enner Valencia has joined the undistinguished list of sportsman to succumb to injury in bizarre circumstances.

The West Ham striker looks likely to miss his team's trip to the Emirates this weekend for the Premier League game against Arsenal after what his manager described as a "freak" incident.

It seems the Ecuadorian cut his toe on a broken cup.

“He had a freak accident at home," explained Sam Allardyce. "He cut his big toe quite severely with a broken cup. It had to be stitched up in hospital. We are not sure but it might be too soon for him to play."

"It is something we didn't expect."

Valencia will likely be embarrassed to have fallen to so innocuous a foe as a cup - but he can console himself that he's not the first sportsman to have hurt himself in unlikely circumstances. Here, we take a look at some memorable injuries...

Valencia joined West Ham in the summer from Pachuca last summer for around £12m.
