Alan Pardew eases fears over Daniel Sturridge’s hamstring but he will miss FA Cup tie with Southampton

Alan Pardew says West Brom do not believe Daniel Sturridge has torn his hamstring, but confirmed he will likely miss Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round game home to Southampton.

The unfortunate striker had to go off injured after just two minutes and 57 seconds of his new team's 3-0 defeat away to champions Chelsea.

"It was a blow to lose Daniel Sturridge on his first run into the corner," Pardew said. "That didn't give us the perfect start. In many ways we've done a decent job tonight but it sums up the season for us. We can't seem to get the goals to get us the win. Daniel's injury will be important now - getting him back.

"We're hoping it's not too bad. We don't think it is a tear or anything. It will probably keep him out of the FA Cup game.

“He'll have to have a scan. He's worked hard this week and we'd given him plenty of rest today. Maybe it's a bit of adrenaline, a 60m run into the corner... when you see the chances we had tonight, that was disappointing. He was distraught.

“The way he's worked at our place has been of the highest order. He's absolutely devastated because he wants this period to be a success for himself and for West Brom. In training he was really sharp. Not many strikers can score goals like he can from tight areas, as [Eden] Hazard did today. It might have made the difference.

“I know this place very well, and we needed to take one of those chances.”
