Guus Hiddink has emerged as a potential candidate to become Chelsea caretaker manager should Roman Abramovich decide to sack Jose Mourinho.

*UPDATE* Jose Mourinho sacked. Full story here.

The Dutchman, 69, took charge of the Blues for a highly successful brief spell in 2009; taking over from Luiz Felipe Scolari, Hiddink lost just one of his 22 matches and won the FA Cup.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on Wednesday held an emergency board meeting with his senior advisors to discuss the future of Mourinho.

No announcement was made by the club and it remains unclear whether Mourinho will be in charge of the club for Saturday's home game with Sunderland, although that seems likely.

Chelsea publicly backed the Portuguese in October, but since then results have not improved with Chelsea 16th in the Premier League with just 15 points from 16 matches - they sit just a point above the relegation zone.

Hiddink considered the top candidate for an interim position, according to the Daily Telegraph, with Juande Ramos, Fabio Capello, Brendan Rodgers and Avram Grant also being considered.

Antonio Conte, who is in charge of Italy until after Euro 2016, and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, are believed to be the two favourites to take over the job permanently.

Mourinho retains the support of the Chelsea fanbase but Hiddink would be the most popular choice from that list of potential candidates.

Since leaving the Blues in June 2009 Hiddink has had unsuccessful spells in charge of Turkey, Anzhi Makhachkala and the Netherlands.

The Dutch national team failed to qualify for Euro 2016 after a disastrous campaign with Hiddink in charge and he was fired in June.
