Chelsea at Twickenham Stadium: Blues consider rugby HQ as Jose Mourinho claims there is more to come from his team

The stadium could be used if Stamford Bridge is redeveloped

Chelsea are currently making Stamford Bridge a fortress again after a third successive Premier League win there this season, but the team may temporarily have to get used to new home at Twickenham.

The Rugby Football Union stated the club sounded them out over the possible future use of the stadium for a season, as Chelsea consider the possibility of expanding their own ground to hold 60,000.

“We are regularly contacted by a variety of organisations, within and outside sport, on a wide range of opportunities concerning use of what we believe is a world-class stadium,” the RFU said in a statement. “We have had an enquiry from Chelsea FC but have not had any discussions of any substance.”

The Premier League club is understood to still just be examining options as they survey whether the future expansion of Stamford Bridge is feasible. “We’re investigating different scenarios as part of the consultation process we started earlier this year, but have had no substance so far,” Chelsea said.

Manager Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, thinks his team have plenty more to offer, despite a fifth win out of six games, as they defeated Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday. The Portuguese claims the World Cup is still having a physical effect on his players, and they are nowhere near their best. Mourinho was asked about Willian, as the Brazilian scored the third goal late to wrap up victory, and finally offered something close to his finest form.

“I think everyone that came from the Brazil national team without a proper holiday and without a proper pre-season, not one of them arrived and had enough time in the pre-season to start the season in a very strong way. All of them, they are coming step by step. Oscar is the same. Now they are getting into the intensity of the game.

“Players, they need holidays. They don’t have holidays. They need a proper pre-season, they don’t have a proper pre-season.”

Oscar sent Chelsea on their away against Villa, putting them ahead after just seven minutes, and said he is targeting 15 goals this season.

Diego Costa hit the second to make it eight goals from six games for the Spanish striker, and Oscar added he has had a huge effect on the team.

“The difference between last season and this is that we have Diego, and Diego is scoring goals. So many of them. But I know and he knows that he needs to continue to do that.

“I like this system. We have good midfield players, and Costa scores a lot of goals. It is working well. I think we are better than last season, because last season we played very well but didn’t score the goals.”

“Diego has come in and he has adapted very well and for us he has been very good.”

Paul Lambert meanwhile said Christian Benteke could return to the Villa squad for next Saturday’s home match against Manchester City, after five months out with an Achilles injury. “I’ll see how he does this week – he’s been back with us for a fortnight now,” Lambert said
