Arsenal: A look back at 2018

Arsenal and Tottenham have been fined a combined £95,000 by the Football Association for failing to control their players when the sides met in early December.

Arsenal’s Premier League win at the Emirates was marred by a bust-up when Eric Dier prompted an angry reaction from the home supporters and players when he exuberantly celebrated Tottenham's first goal of the game.

Dier celebrated in front of the home fans and a melee ensued with both benches, including Mauricio Pochettino, charging along the touchline to get involved.

Tottenham have been fined £50,000 for their part while Arsenal received a £45,000 sanction.

An FA statement read: “Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been fined £45,000 and £50,000 respectively after both clubs admitted an FA charge of failing to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.”

Arsenal overturned a 2-1 first-half deficit and won the game 4-2, but Spurs got their revenge by dumping their rivals out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, winning 2-0 at the Emirates.

Wednesday’s win for 2-0 Tottenham, courtesy of goals from Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli, may also be remembered for the wrong reason after Dele was struck by a bottle thrown from the home end of the crowd.

Arsenal have identified a suspect that “embarrassed” the club by launching the bottle at the Tottenham midfielder. In a statement, Arsenal said: “We have all been embarrassed by the individual who threw a bottle at Dele Alli during Wednesday night's match against Tottenham Hotspur.

“Behaviour of this type has no place at Emirates Stadium and after analysing CCTV footage, which showed him leaving the stadium after throwing the bottle, we have identified an image of the suspect. We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit.”

When asked about the Dele incident and the increasing tension between Arsenal and Tottenham supporters, Pochettino says it is important the fans channel their passion in the correct way.

“It was lucky that it wasn't a big issue. For me, okay we play a derby and we hate each other in a good way but that is in a bad way when you go to damage some people or an opponent,” said the Tottenham manager.

“I cannot talk in general because only one stupid person made a mistake. I respect the Arsenal fans, like I respect the professionals from Arsenal and I respect our fans. For one you cannot talk about everyone. I hope that Arsenal take responsibility and through the camera they can identify because it wasn't a problem but it can happen to be a big problem, some big issue and how are we going to fix it?

“I think Arsenal are going to take some responsibility to identify the people. I cannot say nothing, because always for one cannot pay one million.”
