Arsenal extended their winning streak to seven games after they demolished Liverpool 4-1 to go second in the Premier League and four points away from Chelsea.

While they may not stay in second place come Monday night if Manchester City beat Crystal Palace, Arsene Wenger will be satisfied with how his side took apart Brendan Rodgers’s men so convincingly.

Hector Bellerin was given too much space by Alberto Moreno on the right side of the Liverpool penalty area, and the Spanish right-back was able to cut inside before curling a left-footed effort beyond Mignolet in the far corner.

Three minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead. Mesut Özil won a free-kick on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area when Mamadou Sakho clumsily brought the German down.

Özil stepped up, composed himself, before bending his effort beyond the outstretched Mignolet, who should have done better.

60,081 filled the Emirates for this one and those who support the reds of north London were rewarded seconds before half-time. Alexis Sanchez controlled the ball just outside the Liverpool area and lashed a stunning right-footed effort over Mignolet and into the net.

Liverpool were given a chance to get back into the game when Bellerin conceded a penalty after fouling Sterling. David Ospina dived the right way but Jordan Henderson’s shot was too strong.

Emre Can was sent off with minutes remaining after picking up a second booking when he stupidly fouled Danny Welbeck. Olivier Giroud capped things off when he scored Arsenal's fourth with a powerful left-footed effort.
