Blatter resigns from Fifa

Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter is reportedly in a stable condition after being admitted to hospital in Switzerland.

Blatter’s daughter, Corinne, told Swiss newspaper Blick:  “My father is in hospital. He’s getting better every day. But he needs time and rest. On behalf of my family, I ask for privacy."

Blatter, 84, who was president of football’s global governing body for 17 years, was previously admitted to hospital in 2015 and 2016 with health problems.

Fifa issued a complaint of “criminal mismanagement” against Blatter last month, relating to his and other former officials’ involvement in the Fifa museum project in the Swiss city.

Blatter has denied any wrongdoing. “The accusations are baseless and are vehemently repudiated,” his lawyer, Lorenz Erni, said.

Blatter, who is under criminal investigation in Switzerland over an alleged payment worth over $2m to former Uefa president Michel Platini, was banned from football by Fifa’s ethics committee for six years following a widespread investigation into corruption in 2015. The suspension was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2016 - both Blatter and Platini have denied any wrongdoing.
