The Good

The best penalty ever?

A good amount of time for Alberto Contador, representing the Spaniard's winning margin in this year's Tour de France. Not so great for Andy Schleck, however, given the amount of time he lost on the Col du Tourmalet after his "mechanical incident". The very same 39 seconds, or exactly what would have been enough to secure Schleck the yellow jersey by the narrowest margin in history – just 0.640 seconds.

The Bad

Team orders at Ferrari

Race leader Felipe Massa was ordered to let his team-mate and title hopeful, Fernando Alonso, pass him and take the honours at Hockenheim yesterday. Massa did not look happy on the podium. Even he wasn't as angry as pundit Eddie Jordan, however, who said after the race: "It was unlawful and was theft. They stole from us the chance of having a wheel-to-wheel contest. Ferrari should be ashamed."

Jodie Williams' unbeaten run

The 16-year-old British sprint prodigy was defeated in the 200m at the world junior championships - ending an unbeaten run of 151 races stretching all the way back to 2005. Her conqueror was one Stormy Kendrick. Let's hope that the American's name doesn't prove a portent of times ahead for the youngster.

The Odd

Portsmouth's luck

Relegated, almost ruined, and now getting thumped 4-0 by DC United on their American tour. Things are so bad they even lost their luggage after a lightning storm delayed flight and had to play in borrowed kit in sweltering temperatures of 100F.
