Furious Manchester United fans protest against Glazer ownership at Old Trafford

More than 3,000 fans marched from Manchester city centre to the Theatre of Dreams

Thousands of Manchester United fans gathered outside Old Trafford to protest against the club’s owners, the Glazer family, on Saturday. 

Fans of the club, who face Leeds at Elland Road tomorrow in the Premier League, followed supporters of rivals Arsenal in denouncing their respective American owners.

Hordes of Gunners fans assembled outside the Emirates Stadium to protest against Stan Kroenke, and United fans have now done the same. 

More than 3,000 fans marched from Manchester city centre to the Theatre of Dreams and certainly made their opinion of the Glazers clear with placards and flares alongside the statues of Sir Matt Busby, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best. 

Supporter groups had urged fans via social media to wear masks and be compliant with public health protocols ahead of the protest.

Protestors climbed on the statues to make their voices heard while donning the green and gold colours synonymous with fan protests against the Glazers, which have regularly occurred since the Americans – who also own the Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers – acquired the club back in 2005.

This larger protest comes after approximately 20 Manchester United fans stormed the club’s Carrington training ground on Thursday to voice their displeasure at the owners’ attempt to join the controversial European Super League. 

The group made it onto the first-team pitch and refused to leave, with police set to intervene until manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acted as peacemaker and spoke to them with Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Matic. 

Joel Glazer, who was named European Super League vice-chairman when the announcement was made last Sunday night, apologised on Wednesday in an open letter to all United fans after the club announced they were pulling out of the competition.

It is understood that more fan protests will take place amid rumours that the Glazers are exploring the possibility of selling the club, with a scheduled protest set to take place before United’s home game with Liverpool on 2 May.
