Holders Manchester City cruised into the semi-finals of the FA Cup thanks to two deflected strikes from Bernardo Silva that gave them a 2-0 win over a lacklustre Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

City made five changes from the side that started last weekend's 1-1 Premier League draw with Liverpool and still managed to make the semi-finals of the competition for the sixth season in a row as Newcastle provided little resistance. City took the lead in the 13th minute when a Silva shot took a wicked deflection off Newcastle defender Dan Burn, wrong-footing keeper Martin Dubravka and sending the ball looping into the net.

The home side went 2-0 up in the 31st minute and again it was Portuguese playmaker Silva cutting in from the right and shooting, with Sven Botman's head helping to steer the ball past Dubravka this time. Alexander Isak almost pulled a goal back in the 36th minute but Stefan Ortega got down brilliantly to his left to keep the Swedish striker's bouncing shot out. It proved to be Newcastle's only effort on goal in the game.

Just after the hour mark, Eddie Howe lost patience with his stuttering side and made four substitutions and though the introduction of Miguel Almiron gave the visitors a much-needed injection of creativity in their attack, the home side quickly re-adjusted. Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku both had a number of chances to score but manager Pep Guardiola will not be too bothered by their profligacy in front of goal as his side outclassed the visitors from start to finish.

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon injury ahead of Man City v Newcastle

“It was a strange one. Initially, when you see a player come off like that, you do fear there’s a serious injury but he partly trained yesterday.

“He joined in, seemed okay and I don’t think he did anything serious which is great news for us. We train again today and we’ll do a full session. We’ll make a judgement after that.

“There was a feeling of relief regarding him. It’s been a rare feeling for us that we’ve had one go that way. Most of the time, it has gone the other way when things don’t look serious and it’s turned out to be more complicated than we first thought so I’m delighted because he has been integral to our success.”

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon’s England call-up

“(I’m) delighted for him. I know it’s been a big and ambition of his since he was a little boy. He fully deserves it in my opinion. I think he’s been outstanding this year and he’s continued grow week on week. I’m delighted that’s been recognised and he’s worked so hard.

“From the first day of pre-season after coming back from the (Under-21) Euros with his country and doing so well there, he didn’t stop. He’s scored and created goals, doing brilliantly for the team.”

Manchester City hit by fresh Kevin De Bruyne injury blow as crucial fixtures loom

Kevin De Bruyne has provided Manchester City with a fresh injury concern ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal after Belgium decided it was too risky to call up their captain.

Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco omitted the midfielder from his squad for the March friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and England because of a groin problem.

De Bruyne, who was out for five months after having hamstring surgery in August, has been handled carefully by Pep Guardiola, starting only five of City’s last 10 matches in all competitions.

Premier League title race: Who has the best fixtures - Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal?

The Premier League is heading for a classic title race, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal set for a three-way battle as we approach the run-in.

Manchester City, the defending champions, are aiming to win a fourth league title in a row under Pep Guardiola - a feat that has never been achieved in the history of English football. City blew Arsenal away in last year’s run-in, but the Gunners are back in the fight this campaign and have been joined by a resurgent Liverpool side - who are set for an emotional final months of Jurgen Klopp’s time on Merseyside.

The points were shared at Anfield following an epic clash between Klopp’s Liverpool and Guardiola’s City, as the managerial rivals met in the Premier League for the final time. It means Arsenal lead the way, but the Premier League will return from March’s international break for another blockbuster fixture, as Mikel Arteta’s side visit the Etihad to take on the champions, having already beaten City earlier this season.

Rodri insists Man City are relishing challenge for fourth straight league title

Midfielder Rodri insists Manchester City will embrace the challenge of having to win at least nine of their remaining 10 matches to lift a record-breaking fourth successive Premier League.

The 1-1 draw at Anfield left Pep Guardiola’s side in third place, albeit only a point behind Arsenal who top the table on goal difference from Liverpool.

City face Arsenal next at home at the end of the month, followed by potentially-tricky tests against Aston Villa and Tottenham – also at the Etihad – but as the draw at Anfield was only the second time they have dropped points in the league since mid-December, the Spain international is confident they can put together another winning run.

Man City’s route to Champions League final after quarter-final draw

Manchester City face Real Madrid once again in the Champions League as the holders look to defend their title at Wembley in June.

The teams have met in the semi-finals in the last two seasons, with City thrashing Real 4-0 at the Etihad last year on their way to winning their first European Cup in Istanbul.

Pep Guardiola’s side were knocked out by the Spanish side the year before, however, in an all-time classic tie.

This season’s quarter-finals will therefore be the third year in a row in which City have faced Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout stages.

Pep Guardiola reacts as Man City drawn against Champions League ‘kings’

Pep Guardiola is relishing another clash with Real Madrid after Manchester City were pitted against the Spanish giants for a third successive year.

Champions League holders City will take on the competition’s record 14-time winners in the quarter-finals of this season’s competition next month.

The two clubs have met in the semi-finals for the past two years, with Real winning in 2022 but City avenging that loss – wrapped up with a 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium – last term.

“It looks like a little bit of a tradition, three years in a row playing the kings of the competition,” said City manager Guardiola following Friday’s draw.

Good afternoon!

Manchester City take on Newcastle for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals this evening. Pep Guardiola’s side are the holders and are once again on the Treble hunt; after wining the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last season, they are still in the running for all three trophies this campaign.

It was Newcastle who landed a blow to City earlier this season when Eddie Howe’s team knocked the champions out of the Carabao Cup back in September, but the Magpies landed the worst possible draw when they were handed a trip to the Etihad in the quarter-finals. Newcastle have lost nine matches in a row away to City since their last Etihad win in October 2014.

The FA Cup is now Newcastle’s only chance of winning a trophy this campaign and Howe’s side will be looking to keep their season alive against the holders.
