From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Scott Carson admits he has grown "sick" of being quizzed about his high-profile error against Croatia as he looks to rebuild his England career following his £3.25m move to West Bromwich Albion.

Carson was handed his competitive international debut in the vital Euro 2008 group game at Wembley and his mistake for the first goal by Niko Kranjcar played a large part in the 3-2 defeat which ended hopes of qualification.

The 22-year-old, who was on loan at Aston Villa from Liverpool last season, accepts the criticism he received. A dip in form saw him lose his squad place for the end of season internationals with the US and Trinidad & Tobago.

Carson wants to draw a line under the incident and focus on challenging to regain his England spot and helping Albion establish themselves in the top flight.

Carson said: "Obviously on another day we [England] could have gone through and I could have played in the European Championships but it was one of those situations.

"I made a mistake in the first half, that is fair enough, I accept the criticism," he added. "You can always say what if but there is nothing we can do now so there is no point in keep going back over things.

"It only took me a couple of days to get over it. That's all I could really think about it. I had games at Villa to focus on. To be honest, I'm sick of people keep going over and over the Croatia game. It has gone. It was one of those things but that's in the past and I am looking to the future."

Carson added: "I think I am good enough to get back into that England squad. Hopefully I can get a bit of consistency going again and I'll be looking to get back in.

"I was left out of the end-of-season squads but I don't think I had the best couple of games with Villa before the squad was announced so that was fair enough. I took it on the chin and it just made me want to get back into the squad."

Carson believes he will reap the benefits of finally settling at one club after spending the last three seasons on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Villa respectively.

He said: "Hopefully this is a big chance to show what I can do. It is not easy to go somewhere for a season and try to settle. It takes you three or four months to settle down.

"Then you have to move away again. It will be good to get some roots down and settle. I know the area quite well here from last season with Villa and that should make it easier for me to settle quicker and hopefully I can get back to playing well.

"There was also interest from Stoke and it was a big decision. But, having spoken to the manager here and seen all the facilities, I just could see myself being here for four or five years or even longer and that is what I wanted. I didn't want to go somewhere and maybe after one or two years, not be happy. Hopefully I've made the right decision."
