Seaman comes home to cheers

England's footballers arrived home last night, 36 hours after losing to Brazil in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Hundreds of England fans gathered outside British Airways buildings at Heathrow, desperate for a glimpse of the team, but the squad disembarked inside a private hanger. As they walked from the plane, some 200 airport workers cheered and applauded. There were also chants of "Seaman! Seaman!" for the goalkeeper who had blamed himself for Brazil's winner.

Back at the tournament, South Korea recorded yet another shock when they beat Spain on penalties to reach the semi-finals for the first time. They will now meet Germany for a place in the final. The Spanish were upset to have two apparently legitimate goals disallowed. Their manager said that Fifa should now conduct an inquiry.

In the other quarter-final played yesterday, Turkey beat Senegal with a golden goal to set up a semi-final with Brazil. Members of the extensive Turkish community in the UK were enjoying celebrations that England's fans can only dream about.
