Djibril Cissé, the striker who has indicated a desire to leave Liverpool, came on to inspire France after they had struggled through the first half and put them ahead after 52 minutes. The Swiss scored back with a deserved equaliser when Ludovic Magnin's 79th-minute free-kick went in off the head of the French defender Lilian Thuram.

Holland qualified as first-half goals by Rafael van der Vaart and Barry Opdam brought them victory over the Czech Republic in Group One. Van der Vaart, who has been in inspired form for his new club Hamburg, put them in front in the 30th minute and Opdam, the AZ Alkmaar defender, made sure of victory seven minutes later.

Cristian Zaccardo got off the bench to score the 78th-minute goal that gave Italy a 1-0 victory over Slovenia in Scotland's group and put them in the finals. Norway claimed the play-off place when Sigurd Rushfeldt's goal earned them a 1-0 win over Moldova.

Darijo Srna converted a 56th-minute penalty to give Croatia a 1-0 victory over Sweden that lifted them above their rivals in group eight and gave them a place in the finals. Sweden's captain Olof Mellberg handled in the area to concede the penalty.

Angola showed that the face of African football is changing and that the game can change the image of an anguished nation when they became the first team from the continent to qualify for next summer's finals with a 1-0 victory away to Rwanda. Fabrice Akwa scored the goal that put Angola in their first finals.

Togo also made history by coming from behind twice before beating Congo 3-2 to reach the finals for the first time.
